So, what is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a treatment performed by skilled, trained physical therapists who are certified in the procedure. It does not use drugs or involve surgery. A fine needle is used to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying taut bands of muscle located within the muscle group. Goals of dry needling are to reduce pain, inactivate trigger points and restore function. It rarely is a standalone procedure. Rather, it often is part of a broader physical therapy approach incorporating other traditional physical therapy interventions into treatment.

Why is Dry Needling the upcoming trendy treatment option, especially for neuromusculoskeletal (fancy word for nerves, muscles and bones) pain? Here are just some of the benefits…

  • Pain relief for muscular pain
  • Reduce muscle tightness/stiffness
  • Improve flexibility
  • Increase range of motion
  • Accelerate your recovery after an injury or surgery
  • Improve chronic pain conditions

Of course, all procedures have their (small) risks…

Mild side effects are very common; serious side effects are rare.

  • Temporary soreness
  • Bruising around injection site
  • Mild bleeding around injection site
